17:22 Local = STUMPS = Done for the day. This was always on the cards, wuzzan’t it? Only 24.1 overs of play today and both teams had their moments, more England than Australia I would say. Just when the home team seemed to tighten grip over the proceedings, the heavens opened up and refused to cease. Very dull end to what promised to be a fascinating moving day’s Test cricket. With just two more days left, it would take some doing to produce a result in this game. And if the home team have any hopes of announcing a comeback, they will have the task of dismissing Smith twice. Goodluck with that! On a brighter note, the weather’s set to be fair for most parts of tomorrow. Let’s just hope it doesn’t remain a prediction. There won’t be an early start, remember. Join us @ 11:00 local tomorrow to – hopefully – witness some battle between bat and ball. Cheers for now!!
5pm local, 9.30pm IST: Rain has stopped for the time being. There’s going to be an inspection at 5.20pm local.
16:23 local = The hope’s diminishing. It’s absolutely pelting down and things are looking pretty bleak at the moment.
16:06 local = Inspection in 24 minutes from now: The umpires took a stroll around the outfield and scheduled an inspection @16:30 local. There is still rain (very light) at the moment, mind you. Fingers crossed!
15:46 local = Time to dunk a biscuit into a cup of tea. Yes, it’s official. The umpires have called for tea with rain refusing to relent.
14:42 local = More sorry news: ‘So the weather right now is the frustrating type: rain you’d play on in but not start. It’s persistent, too. Some people say in the exposed parts of the stands are braving it without umbrellas, but even they might retreat to cover soon enough. The forecasts say it’s set to continue. If we get a break for an hour, we could easily get at least 30 mins of play in (within that hour). The only issue is I’m not sure when that break is coming,’ the ever-alert Vithushan sums up the situation at Lord’s.
14:17 local = Insert your favourite rain music: As it continues to rain at Lord’s, why not engage in some fun? What do you think of Steve Smith’s batting/shuffling technique? There are plenty of memes on social media comparing his leaves to that of Courtney Walsh. Agree? Got the hint? Let’s talk about the idiosyncrasies of leaving techniques. Do send in your views @HaveYourSay section with a valid name and we promise some space in our little cricket world. Shoot!!
13:42 local = No improvement in weather: We should have resumed the post-lunch session by now, but I’m afraid we could be in for a long delay. The covers are firmly in place. More updates to follow…
12:58 local = Early lunch: With the rains getting heavy, the umpires made a smart decision (not to prolong) you’d think. Today wasn’t as bright as yesterday to start with, but the gloom and doom surrounding Bancroft’s front foot technique once again grasped the attention of the English bowlers who kept tight lines to induce an error, and the error…..eventually arrived, after 65 balls of stubbornness. Usman Khawaja looked like having a busy day, but he soon became the victim of ‘one brings two’ theory. Travis Head never looked settled and it was only a matter of time before Broad trapped him leg before. Wade’s looking iffy too and so is the weather for the rest of the day. Let’s hope we have better and brighter updates as and when we return. And hey, what about Steve Smith? Please scroll through – 28.4, 29.5 and 36.4 to comprehend our state of awe. Back in 40 (hopefully) fellas…
